Is the change applied internationally or in the US only? Google Maps does have the capability to show a different name based on the user’s region. Since the official name is still Gulf of Mexico in the rest of the world, it would make sense to use the new name in the US only.

As long as it is not the "Gulf of the United States of America", I think it is still geographically correct. As long as my map stays with "Gulf of Mexico" on it, of course ;-)

Here in Germany, naming of places, roads, whatever is a constant debate. This is a very political subject, this is part of the public life of countries/communities.

Interestingly not so much in France. I do not remember a debate about that neither locally nor nationally.

There certainly were some, it is just that this is not mainstream.

Still not geographically correct, as the gulf is curled in between USA and Mexico, which is a part of North America and nowhere near South America.

Well he’s president now so these outlandish ideas are now official policy. Who would have predicted this ten years ago?

Google displays place names as their official local names. The same place can be named differently baed on the location of the user.

Is this for all locales of Google Maps? Or will google.com.mx/maps not include this change?
