Ask HN: What to do about startup job

Currently working with a scale up with a very rocky future.

Joined about 3 years back, always felt weird about this place. Multiple leaders have left, and to be honest I don't really see the value my team brings to the place anyway.

At this point I'm only really here for the immigration sponsorship. Otherwise, I would have considered quitting without anything lined up to just take a break and figure out what's next.

What would folks recommend I do here?

I can guess that you feel like you are trapped by unfavorable circumstances.

Would it be possible for you to brush up your CV and seriously look for a new job? You might need to get creative with casting your 3 years experience into the most positive terms possible.

With the current state of funding and the economy in general, your company might not be around for much longer. It could end up like having your life-vest on and stepping into the lifeboat as the ship sinks.

Since immigration sponsorship is crucial, it’s wise to stay while passively exploring new opportunities and networking. Focus on upskilling or working on side projects to keep yourself prepared for future moves. If the current role isn’t providing value, think about how it can still support your long-term goals.

It's hard to say without knowing more about your situation.

But generally I would say life is too short to waste on a dead end job where you're not learning or adding value.

I'd prioritize finding something you're excited about before quitting. You may even be able to transition your immigration process.

Leaving to a new job will mean starting from scratch unfortunately. This is a us perm process

I went through that several years ago. Tough call. If your priority date is within reach, it might be better to wait it out.

What country? Your options really vary based on the laws there.

Overall, if leadership is leaving often - especially at the C suite, its game over 90% of the time.

USA

Can you change teams? Even at smaller companies there can be large culture and impact differences between teams.
