I'd note that the number of people creating content now is probably two or six orders orders of magnitude larger than before the internet, when it was just print/radio/TV/etc.

Most that Joe Random could expect to get in print would be a Letter to the Editor, or a random passerby interview. The in-crowd was even more "unusual".
