this uses the same openstreetmap backend but how do they manage to make the map look so fucking ugly? any idea ? is this like the race to the bottom at government level inherent as a cost saving measure ? or something else?

qwant maps otoh looks amazing compared to this monstrosity


I used the OSM backend recently and it looks exactly like the qwant map. Pretty easy to implement yourself using leaflet or alternatively just using OSM. The map you linked seems to have its own added tile layers. Probably just based on the OSM tiles, then they added a whole bunch of their own stuff.


sure. they are doing their own thing but why does it have to be UGLY?


the architecture is explained at https://github.com/Qwant/qwantmaps ("Erdapfel, kartotherian, Mimirsbrunn, Idunn") with most components open sourced. OSM edits show up 24h later if you include the POI tags it is looking for to be shown. The address detection needs some more tolerance though. It mostly fails if I do not include commas at the necessary spots or use area codes with city names. I'm personally happy with qwant in general as bing index frontend and like their open approach with maps
