Do smart supermarkets herald the end of shopping as we know it? (theguardian.com)

No one likes queuing but I don't like being surveilled as deeply as this set up implies, I also have concerns around the assumption you have a smartphone. I personally pay in cash on purpose at supermarkets.

These supermarkets exclude anyone who doesn't have a smartphone or doesn't want to download yet another app.

Questions I have is what happens if you get in then turn your phone off, or take something and put something that weighs the same on the shelf?

Let's hope so, the biggest frustration is the queing and the self-service option with 'everyone is thief' as a default setting comes a close second.

I dunno when it happened and precisely why, but at some point before the pandemic every single store I visit (in Ontario) shut off the “are you stealing stuff?” scales and such.

Now I can scan items any which way with or without placing them in the bagging area.

I’m still salty about this becoming my job, though.

I really hope this means that small mom and pop stores and the implied personal service will come back. Hipsters get on it!!
