I'm sorry you had to go through all of this. As myself being part of a minority, I can only tell you that I do my best to fight for minorities and women first in this IT env that can be rough.
Keep faith cause I've worked in different companies where everyone was really accepted and celebrated. Thank you for writing this article: hopefully, straight IT men will hear us and fight too.
I have used https://calculator.aws/ in the past, but to be honest it's difficult to account for the egress costs/networking fees using their calculator. Simple things like networking between Availability Zones/Regions can really creep up in your monthly bills if you don't watch out.
I do track my expenses on a sheet manually, using a ballpark figure. At the end of the month I compare it with my AWS bill. If something seems off, I investigate it further. But I don't try to predict exact figures, more like expected ranges.
I do miss the fixed-cost nature of DigitalOcean/Linode. I didn't have to worry about sudden charges, you pay $20/mo per node and that's it. Lots of bandwidth included.
But for the most part it's fine, as long no bot starts bombarding your services with useless requests, egress costs tend to scale with revenue in my case, as my product's pricing is based on usage.
I also have Cloudflare in front of my AWS stack, it has blocked a few small attacks already, but nothing serious yet.
I think it is conventional knowledge that if you are a minority you are often forced to overcome discrimination and are being judged more harshly. I mostly second-hand experienced this because half of my family are immigrants from a country that had "low-status" when they got here.
Just to be sure: if you are young/new please don't take this as discouragement. The less it applies to you the better. And if you face discrimination then take pride in your accomplishments in spite of adversity.
Based on my experience its the opposite. If you are a female minority, large companies will pay you to attend a bootcamp and join them. There are so many great opportunities out there for people from all sorts of backgrounds
They don't talk about nuclear waste highly toxic that is buried in the north east of France and that they don't know what to do with. Nuclear is good for environment temporarily, but on the long term, if we don't know how to reuse nuclear waste, it will be worse.
Currently it's stored in nuclear waste bin, in pools in a few hangar.
There is plan to store the in a geological stable hole, that we known that it won't move for a long time.
> The Nuclear Safety Authority has confirmed that the rock has not moved for several million years.
I'm tired of those self improvement hack 2 cents worth. Do what you love people, just focus on life and don't use all the time process. Process is made for stupid repetitive task, not learning.
This society is so individualist, that we talk only about the self.
Maybe that was possible 50-100 years ago when you were not living in a global village where everyone around the world can come and knock on your door and demand your attention. Nowadays we need to constantly remind ourselves that we need to find time for uninterrupted focus. And these articles about deep work are just that for me, reminders.
