Earlier in the year I got a replacement rear-view mirror with an anti-glare coating and it's paid dividends. It helps so much at night on dark sections of road when newer cars with bright headlights are around me. Finally decided to also replace my side mirrors with ones that have a similar coating.
My old 2003 Lexus has some sort of anti-bright headlight feature for the rear view mirror that was a gamechanger when I got it. I always notice when I drive another car.
yeah, some cars have powered dimming. most have the little tab/switch at the bottom you need to flick whenever you want to use the dimmer angle. in my last car that would always mess up my optimal rear view mirror angle and position, which would get annoying and turn into a hassle.
> They also made sure to add scary warnings so one can never offer a normal onboarding flow.
is this any different from Macs also prompting the user when a downloaded binary is suspicious/not signed properly? or windows when installing it'd flash a screen about trusting what you're installing?
It was way worse. They basically made the first install attempt fail. Then they made you go to the Settings app (of course without telling you that you have to go there) to allow it. Then you had to try again to download, which then triggered the scary warnings that you had to accept. This has been changed now though due to EU pressure.
I thought that's also like macos, where we've needed to right click and open and then allow, and sometimes it requires going to system settings to approve it also.
the point of a bus having lights flashing and the stop sign extended is that kids could be coming or going from any direction and especially when least expected. it's certainly a minor issue until the worst case scenario happens.
The issue in the US is not about safety near schools. School buses often have to go pretty far to drop evyone off, so most of their stops are not near the school. For route optimization they'll drop kids off on the opposite side of the road from where they need to be, not at a bus stop and not anywhere near a crosswalk. Also kids in the US tend to not be very mindful of how dangerous the road can be, so they are liable to run into the street unpredictably. To make sure kids don't get hit by a car that didn't see them, when stopping a school bus deploys a stop sign from its side that all drivers going either direction on the road must abide by (usually, there are exceptions, which makes matters worse). Drivers occasionally accidentally run these stop signs and very rarely intentionally run them.
Sounds more like a testing problem to me. Honestly I can't even remember if this particular rule was on the license exam when I took it. I know it because I put more care into remembering driving laws but many people don't.
Possibly an occasional refresher would help. I think it's just a weird thing to have. A roving stop sign that appears and disappears conditionally is going to have some people not see it (people accidentally run stationary stop signs on occasion), especially if you don't encounter school buses often. It's been maybe a decade since I needed to stop for one myself, I honestly cannot remember the last time.
And it would be an even bigger issue if the driver did not have perfect 360 degree spacial awareness and could react to a child in single digit milliseconds
This implies the absence of a school bus with flashing lights means kids can't be coming and going from any direction when least expected. It's a horrible solution and just another example of reducing drivers' responsibility on the road and effectively making it the victim's fault for being there.
The Waymo is going to be on high alert at all times, regardless of any flashing lights or stop signs.
Not sure if the same issue but since iOS 18 and now 26, if the keyboard/text field detects a grammatical error or typo (even when you don't care) it'll almost do this UI thread block type thing where it refuses to let you move the cursor or close the keyboard until you act like you're fixing the error.
it's been doing this since august for me. multiple times instead of using typical cli tools to edit a text file it's tried to write a python script that opens the file, edits it, and saves it. mind-boggling.
it used to consistently use cli tools all the time for these simple tasks.
Grocery delivery services are already ruining the regular supermarkets. My local grocery store used to always have fresh stock and full shelves. For the past year or two I've noticed a rapid increase in delivery shoppers who typically have 2-3 hand baskets or 2 full carts with them in aisles and clearing out shelves of food.
my shiba inu rarely plays with any of his toys these days. he's 4.5 years old. of course that breed is typically known as being more primitive, so i wonder if that can be attributed to it.
