We’re creating robots that autonomously construct buildings. We design all of our hardware and software in-house in central Amsterdam, starting with autonomous bricklaying robots.
Building a robot like this means solving all sorts of interesting challenges: figuring out the robot's position with sub-mm precision; navigating autonomously around the building site; automating measurement and calibration of new robots; lots of distributed systems and so on.
Our robots are now continuously deployed on customer sites and we are earning real money as a masonry contractor. The full team is more than 60 people and we're growing rapidly to meet demand.
Our stack is mostly: Rust, TypeScript, Python, NixOS.
Some open roles:
- Software Engineer, Controls
- Software Engineer, Machine Vision
- Assembly/manufacturing technicians and robot operators
P.S. We're always on the lookout for very strong generalist engineers who can operate at any layer of the stack (firmware, networking, UI, application code - whatever's needed!) Drop me an email if this sounds like you.
Monumental is "unable to support relocation", but you can sponsor visas -- does this just mean you won't help pay relocation expenses or is there a more fundamental reason why someone couldn't move to Amsterdam to work for you?
Ah, this is specifically for the Forward Deployed Robotics Engineer role.
For that role, we are currently looking for candidates who are already living in the Netherlands. If you are a foreigner, but already live here, we can continue sponsoring your visa.
For the other software roles we will consider candidates who want to move to Amsterdam from abroad. We can get you the necessary work visa.
Isn't the issue that some people work around MOT decibel limits? After all they only need to pass the decibel limit on the MOT test, and not on the road in regular use.
The engineering solution approach doesn't seem to be fundamentally different to speed cameras.
Motorcycle exhausts are easy to swap out so people could easily take the MOT with the stock exhaust then swap the loud exhaust into place when they get home.
I used to live in downtown Chicago, where the worst violators where high end sports cars, though we did get the occasional quartet of motorcycles ripping down the roat at 3am.
Illinois doesn't require vehicle inspections, so there's no opportunity for exhaust modifications to be discovered.

Have you been in the startup job market recently? 110k EUR seems like the most common baseline I see for high-growth EU startups hiring engineers with a few YoE. I don't work at a hyped finance company but I make north of the range listed above.
Can you recommend sites that have postings for EU startup jobs? I recently received EU citizenship so I'm thinking of making my way over to Europe in the next year or so.
How much is language a barrier for these kinds of jobs? I'm a native speaker of English and think that I can become proficient with French again within 3-6 months of immersion.
I think the best way to find these roles is not to go through job boards at all. Job boards tend not to have the best quality talent, so the best quality jobs don't go there at all. I would say the biggest alpha in getting these jobs is keeping an eye out for routine funding announcements and applying directly via the company's page on Lever. I average around 1-2 recruiter inbound per month for this kind of role.
The well paying jobs are the ones at startups funded by US VCs. It's much easier to pay well when you think of EU talent as a 25-50% discount on bay area salaries.
My suggestion would be Process Compose[1]. Just write a simple config telling it what commands to run; it will launch them all and give you a nice TUI to read the stdout and control each process individually.

We have built a machine vision pipeline that can achieve sub-millimetre localisation on construction sites, and a software stack that lets us prototype on the fly. We have a pipeline full of exciting (building) projects and are making real revenue as a masonry contractor each month.
The full team is now about 45 people (and still growing fast!) There’s strong customer demand for what we’re building and we need talented people to meet it.

Where does one apply for a generalist role / any flexibility on Visa sponsoring if I relocate myself? (My experience is lock and key for what you've got going e.g. I founded a robotic tile laying company, and an IoT Ag-tech company)

I'm sorry to ask such a silly question, but do all of the engineering positions sponsor, or is it just the Forward Deployed Robotics Engineer position? Similarly is it primarily a dutch or English speaking office?
Only the forward engineer position mentions anything about sponsorship and language, and I'm wondering if that's because it's the only position that offers sponsorship, or if they all do
We can sponsor visas for any engineering position.
English is the primary language at Monumental, and we have many non-Dutch speakers. However, Dutch is a _useful_ skill to have if you are frequently deployed on construction sites (and we do take that into consideration for the FDRE role).
Strange definition of 'civil'. I think I'd use 'built by a private company' instead.
Great achievement though.
Edit: apparently it was unclear to many readers - Concorde was a supersonic civilian aircraft. And, though partly built by private companies, it was certainly a state project.
I had two (an OG kickstarter pebble, and the steel), and also suffered screen death. The battery life was incredible, but I don’t know that I could give up the standalone features that the apple watch ultra 2 has. On-device Siri, tap to pay, calling without the phone nearby.. I hate the digital crown though, and it could use a proper torch like the Garmin watches have, so it’s far from perfect.
There was a hack "solution" to fix the display by putting a piece of cardboard or paper behind it to keep the connection good. I was able to get my OG pebble working again until it was finally replaced by an Apple Watch I was gifted quite some time later (like a year or two!) :)
