that's all well and good but not when it is peddled by you simultaneously in other facets: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46065778

the technical issues are completely valid. at the same time, there is a balance between citing reasons for the change and burning bridges with those you leave behind.

the friction caused for the supporters felt a bit tone deaf. although the project itself runs on strong principles so i can imagine they know what they signed up for.

feels like the main message is missed by seeing most of the discourse here:

> Outages like today's are a good thing because they're a warning. They can force redundancy and resilience into systems.

the advice is not to shun big companies and providers, but rather have a backup solution built-in for situations like this. switching solely to an in-house alternative is not always a great idea, but it can be a great backup solution.

> There is a weird assumption people make that somebody as successful as Charli XCX isn't smart because her persona is "I like cocaine and partying," and then are surprised when she can express herself like this.

after all, it takes a smart guy to play dumb. artists do portray a persona, or are encouraged by labels. at the same time we cannot blame others for buying it or making their own assumptions.

from first look about the book club podcast, it seems great that one reads a book and gets to talk directly with its author.

> Online bookings, such as through Expedia, are immediately canceled, even if they concern hotels in France.

as bizarre as it this situation is, similar power was leveraged to deny american it services to a non-european company outside of the eu [1].

of course not involving the exact judge, but this just highlights the geographical concentration of major web services.

speculating that it might be one of those arm + gpu SoC that gpu makers are currently developing, probably the amd one.

outside of gaming, i hope this work for qualcomm chips help those who bought laptops with their chips somehow. (i understand it is not the same stack but in theory)

having used desktop linux before i even started gaming on a pc, things are easier but still not there yet for the general masses. personally, it is still not there either.

take one of the most popular ea sports title. it does not run:

- on linux via proton, because of anti-cheat

- inside a windows vm (in linux), because of anti-cheat

- via cloud streaming (technically perhaps because of the previous reason)

still got people exploiting and just a horrible experience in competitive mode. so much so that devs refuse to allow a universal marketplace. the console folks disable crossplay to avoid any trouble in competitive modes.

the same publisher went out of their way to support nintendo switch with crossplay, but steam deck does not seem to be big enough to go through with the actual work in making things work right. these titles print money and have the most means to make this possible from their end.

so if you want to play mainstream online experiences, or with simulator accessories, you are mostly on your own or dedicated community efforts. maybe a few more years in the oven?

will always champion the notion of keeping things as simple as possible. however this take seems a bit overreactive.

their stack has been some of the easiest low-hanging fruits for enhancing self-managed web stuff. almost everyone who agrees with this sentiment is also relying on someone else in the chain to keep their sites up. in my limited experience, the latter ended up being less reliable in the past decade or so.

funnily enough the site was (momentarily) not loading for me, but instantly did right after.

does it matter much when in the end pricing is decided by merit-order system [1]? i.e. when you are dependent on other sources or neighbouring markets with very different composition.

not to say it is remains costlier than conventional sources, albeit not accounting for externalities.
