This one time on an episode of Survivorman, Kalahari iirc, I watched Les Stroud use a hole in the dirt and a clear plastic tarp covering it to act as a solar still. The condensation from his pee in said hole ran off to a collection container as pure H20 once evaporated.
I just remember thinking to myself "Bear Grylls drinking his own pee is such a philistine, here is an actual pro using science to remove all the water from that pee instead first." Genuine moment of awe personally.
"Microsoft could opt for Windows 11 or Windows 12 in future, but if people upgrade to Windows 10 and the regular updates do the trick then everyone will just settle for just "Windows" without even worrying about the version number."
Windows 11 is fetid garbage. There is no improvement worth subjecting myself to it and never will be far as I can see. I will never install or use it. LTSC for now and the forseeable future for my use cases. Updates are only done if I deem them additive and not routine. Security is not my biggest red line anyway. Updates are a choice not an inevitability and retaining choice is my right as a user as well as my responsibility to exercise wisely. Forcing compliance is a bad way to get me to do things. TPM, UEFI, Attestation systems of any kind are used as I see fit only and how I deem acceptable.
I rue the slow march away from customization, self-administration, interoperability and the long walk toward closed systems with trusted components required to work and perform basic things. That approval of the gatekeepers. I will stay my own gatekeeper, thanks. Netflix can suck it, i'll torrent it instead if it won't work without golden keys.
All that stuff is really only the foundation for the long game of future-proofing revenue streams for content makers anyway. A means to exercise control over it and you using it.
Meanwhile those of us dumb enough to wind up with TCL Roku TV's have lost (well I have lost personally):
- All app sideloading. Bye Pornhub app, you died too soon. Roku uninstalled the apps sideloaded from my tv's the day this changed. I've never been so angry.
- SHOUTCast App inexplicably removed from both TV's and unavailable now with unhelpful message saying it's gone because reasons.
- The 10.0.5 update one one of the two units REMOVED VOLUME LEVELLING, which the unit came with, and it's never come back.
Yeah Roku can get fucked. What a poor outcome those two tv's were ultimately. Removing functionality you had at purchase time should be illegal.
I think facebook's main "revolution" is that it was the first internet as real society platform. Others were websites to make profiles, myspace added artists, but facebook was all about the "real you".
It was just ripe for when internet became a plausible soil for society.
Once upon a time we had Lotus Sametime in office for IM communication and we liked it. It was good. It worked and didn't have dealbeaking quirks or fails. I miss Sametime, always have.
Lync was not perfect, and Skype for Business even less so, but they at least had a UI that wasn't a chainsaw massacre to use or to stare at. Every time I have to use Teams because it's the de-facto standard I always come away from the conference call feeling dirty - like I just used a nasty shopping cart at a disgusting filthy walmart to get groceries - and makes me pine for SfB or Sametime.
Clearly because they've done a poor job of integrating and then forcing adoption of the stickers and gif inputs. They should've threatened to call forth a Skypening if the users failed to enthusiastically and relentlessly toss questionable stickers and gifs onto every other line in a work IM. From every colleague. From LoB to shining LoB. Cross-silos and spanning every Org... until the market is fully forcefully penetrated.
One day we'll all make the switch to sticker based conversating, but until they push it feverishly and madly like the world is ending that evolution will be just out of our grasp. They simply halfassedly work to make it actively bad and don't really have the drive to make it truly sinister like they should. Somehow it would drive gains in the share price quarter over quarter like any sufficiently evil dark pattern spec software always does automagically.
Frustratingly Microsoft is just not laser-focused enough on driving the adoption of a campaign to hit those KPI's it seems.
They used to call it "Adam" when it was sold openly in Dallas, TX bars before it got emergency scheduled and banned in '85. Only had a brief year or so legally before it called down the crackhouse on its popularity then was banhammered federally and kicked.
As an old head, lifelong Junglist and retired long serving Minister of Raves for the Party People Party, this is thrilling to hear. Please pass the MDMA, whatever Dutch doublestacks bearing a high dose warning (yes, a real label for 250mg+ per dose) you have in stock. Teslas would be wonderful. Thanks~~~
Now, when can someone enterprising small business startup stand themselves up an independent dispensary? What about the install of the drive through window? Until we allow for take out and achieve feature parity with alcohol these substances are being discriminated against. If intoxicants were races then LSD could use affirmative Action to get it on par with how we treat tobacco and booze. Treat it like alcohol already. Better yet don't concern yourself with what people put in their bodies unless they make you have to intervene for public order or safety's sake.
Without the myopic and impotent moral bias these substances have suffered through since their discoveries this becomes pretty simple and surprisingly straightforward to live with socially.
People don't typically abuse psychedelics to addiction. Notable exceptions being stimulants obviously. LSD is evil, mushrooms are great, and everything in between will have you feeling various degrees of regret and anxiety about what you just took and how long it's going to be warping your reality. That gets dicey if things take a downward turn and things spiral into a true bad trip.
These chemicals are decompilers for the mind and should be treated with the respect you would give your mind's configuration files. The psychological consequences from a bad experience can be lifelong and stay with you forever, but we're adults and hopefully RTFM and follow best practices and take precautions. There should be no one telling me what I can't put in my own body... long as I accept the end result of it.
Sorry for the /rant, this hits close to home and I have many feels about it.
