For example, the top bar on New Yorker: https://www.newyorker.com/news/letter-from-the-uk/riding-lon... .

Or a more obviously one, the HUGE top bar on Material Design site: https://material.io .

The Chinese character "企" has multiple meanings. One is "to stand on tiptoe".[1] So "企鹅 (penguin)" means "standing goose".

The character 企 also looks like a penguin by itself.

Correct me if I'm wrong: Telegram has been blocked in China mainland. So if normal Chinese botnets want to DDOS Telegram, they will be blocked by GFW first. So how these botnets succeeded? Does that mean they are "special"?

GFW has many ways of blocking things, I would assume that they just aren't blocking all traffic to telegram IPs.

Pretty sure they are.

Are they actually blocking outgoing packets to the IPs or injecting RSTs or blocking incoming packets from those IPs? I don't have a Chinese connection to test from right now.

My understanding is that it's a heterogeneous system that does different things for different people at different times.

Looks like Wikipedia has some technical details-

Google didn't withdrawn. They stopped censorshipping sensitive keywords and moved their servers to Hong Kong. Then China blocked their sites. You can't withdraw from the Internet by simply move your servers. Bing censor sensitive keywords so China allows them to stay.

Related to Chinese game censorship:

1. A game developed by Taiwanese studio, Devotion, has been removed from Stream by its developers due to a hiding meme about Xi Jinping founded by Chinese gamers earlier this year.[1]

2. Still earlier this year, Chinese Overwatch players being instantly banned from the game for typing the words "Winnie the Pooh" in public chat.[2]

They should switch it up with the Winnie the pooh references.

And you can't rate & review this app on Apple App Store.[0] I think only some apps made by Apple have this privilege.

That's interesting...and disturbing.

Why? Someone should press Tim Cook about this.

No they shouldn't. If anything this protects people. Just imagine people getting "caught" rating this. If it wasn't impossible, people might accidentally rate it badly.

This would do nothing to stop this, but might really be a problem for them.

Tesla starts building Gigafactory in China, expects to begin production in the second half in 2019. Also they start for hiring locals[1]. Is this related?

[1]https://www.cnbc.com/2018/12/06/teslas-china-factory-set-to-...

>Tesla starts building Gigafactory in China

Tesla didn't start to build anything. The Chinese government put them on notice because there was no work done. So, of course, Elon flies by himself to China to put on a grand opening show and says they'll start production in a year.

How is it this community, who prides itself on being so smart, can fall for this?

No car factory has ever been built that fast. How can it be in production in less than a year? Where is the money coming from? After the disastrous Model 3 launch, are there still people on the planet that think Musk knows more than the incumbents about building a factory? Remember 3D assembly lines and robots so fast you'll need a strobe light to see them?

It's astonishing that people are still buying into this story.

Hi, checked the Android version Meta Meme app. One suggestion: split it into arm and x86 version for the the ffmpeg lib to reduce the apk size. Each of them is 9MB which is not a small number.

And now she starts getting adoption ads: https://twitter.com/gbrockell/status/1072992972701138945 .

"We're sorry your baby passed away, how about get a new one from here?"

That's sick.
