> Dark mode should be reserved for after sunset and before sunrise.

Isn’t that already how it works in all major operating systems?

No, it’s only configurable. And many people like myself leave it dark mode permanently unless in a bright place.

I think the debate comes down to how bright you keep your environment.

OP likes bright overhead lighting and confuses that preference for the superiority of a preference downstream of it. Yawn.

I’d rather look at a bright 27” screen in dark mode where I see full color fidelity than dim the screen so that bright backgrounds aren’t too harsh. But it’s just a preference.

It’s definitely not only configurable. In macOS I have it set to change according to time of day.

Indeed! I also recognize that it would be even better if more apps and websites supported this.

The Helix mode in Zed is promising, but still nowhere near complete, and has a long way to go before it is as user-friendly as the Helix editor. For instance, the nice pop-up display of available commands. When I press “g” in Helix, I get a nice list of all the “goto” commands. This is very useful for discovering new features, and when you have forgotten something. This feature does not yet exist in Zed. And this is just one of many examples.

How do we know how high pterodactyls were flying?

Scientists created a detailed virtual reconstruction of pterodactyl’s body and then feed it to computer simulation to estimate flight speed, endurance and altitude.

Came here to ask the same thing. Hoping you get a response from an expert. I was vaguely under the impression they were mostly gliders... maybe it's something to do with thermals?

This seems like one of those things some people are more sensitive to than others. To my eyes, an LCD or an OLED is just as good as e-ink for reading, except in very bright sunlight.

Me too. I honestly don’t understand why it provokes so strong reactions. In fact, I find all of the changes fairly minor. I expected something much more radical when Apple announced a major design overhaul. Things look slightly different, but work pretty much the same.

Many churches were in construction for over a century, yes. Today? I’m not familiar with any examples other than Sagrada Familia, and even that one is almost finished. These multi-generation building projects seem to be a thing of the past.

Imagine trying to get funding today for a building project that is scheduled to be completed long after everyone alive today would be dead. I can’t imagine that being possible. It’s a pity: I wonder what wonders we could have built using modern technology over such a long timescale.

The Cathedral of St John the Divine in New York is also unfinished, with construction in fits & starts since 1892: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathedral_of_St._John_the_Divi...

Hram Svetog Save (Church of Saint Sava) in Belgrade/Serbia started construction in 1935 and the exterior was finished in 2017. I haven’t been there in several years, but my understanding is that the interior is still being worked on and will continue for some years to come…

So not quite “over a century” but getting close. :)

I am closer to the first camp than the second, and I don’t understand why I would need longer battery life. The watch charges very quickly, and there is never a day when I don’t have the chance to charge at some point. I usually do it during my morning shower.

1. People use these GPS watches for Ironman triathlons, ultra running & cycling events etc. They can't and won't charge before the battery is done - and remember the battery with a daily charge will degrade significantly. If it's borderline on release, it'll be inadequate after a year.

2. Just for general convenience, having to take another special cable for every late night or overnight trip is maddening. I always have a phone anyway for any actual interactions.

I find it hard to believe many people are writing texts on their watches, it's just a nice to have gimmick feature that everyone I know has stopped using.

> and remember the battery with a daily charge will degrade significantly. If it's borderline on release, it'll be inadequate after a year.

That has not been my experience though - having used both an Apple Watch and a Pixel Watch for years on end every single day. Absolutely outside my area of expertise, but I would imagine that you can design batteries to have a much longer lifetime (no of recharge cycles) when their capacity is smaller.

That’s not how Lion charging works - degradation and lifetime (to a first approximation) depend on full charges. If you charge daily from 80% to 100% or charge every 5 days from 1% to 100%, your battery degradation and lifetime will be the same.

Isn’t that how most coworking spaces work already? I’ve worked from a lot of them, and it always worked like that: I check in when I arrive in the morning, and when I check out at the end of the day, I pay for the number of hours I have spent there (often capped to a maximum of 5 hours or so, even if I stay longer).

My original comment was an offhand observation, but the difference under assumption is that co-working spaces require a contract/commitment, whereas the scenario I had in mind was no commitment other than paying for each time of use.

Maybe that's already a thing; my sense of self is not dependent upon being "right" in this matter.

That only means that OpenAI have to keep logs of all conversations, not that ChatGPT will retain memories of all conversations.

you could explain that to ChatGPT and it would agree but then again, if you HAVE TO keep the logs ...

How did you manage without cash in France? Many places here don’t accept anything but cash for amounts less than 5 or 10 Euros. If I just want to buy a coffee or a baguette, I often need cash.

I spent a few days in French Basque Country and restaurants and fresh markets all accepted credit cards and Apple Pay.

I was traveling with family so spending limits were higher than 5 euros
