I'm wondering if residential homes will go off grid just to save on money. I have more than one residence and the costs to manage the places that I am away from is not insignificant. Just the power connection and minimal costs to keep basic heat and electricity is _costly_. With modern electronics and minor solar hookups, I could see a trend to disconnect from the grid.
